Shelton Showcases Deep Learning AI for Textile Inspection
Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning are steadily entering the textile technology sector. At ITMA Asia + CITME 2025, scheduled for October 28–31 in Singapore, UK-based Shelton Vision will showcase how these advanced technologies are transforming its machine vision inspection systems. Shelton is among a 20-member delegation from the British Textile Machinery Association (BTMA) participating in the exhibition. The group will present cutting-edge solutions in areas such as high-performance fibres, fabric innovations, testing equipment, instrumentation, and process control. A major breakthrough lies in the ability to identify and classify even the smallest flaws in both plain and patterned fabrics moving at high industrial speeds. Shelton’s latest inspection technology integrates machine learning, enabling 98%+ defect detection accuracy, while Deep Learning AI pushes defect classification and grading accuracy close to 100%.
Shelton will also highlight its stand-alone AI Classifier, designed for multiple applications within its machine vision ecosystem. Notably, this classifier can be integrated with third-party inspection systems lacking classification or grading functionality. By removing subjective manual decisions, it enhances operational efficiency and throughput. In addition, Shelton will demonstrate its optimized cut plan system within its AI Review station and fabric production plants. This system, powered by automated classification and grading, significantly contributes to the return on investment (ROI) of the entire process. “Our showcase will emphasize how output data from our vision systems benefits the entire textile value chain,” said CEO Mark Shelton. “Reliable fabric quality data is available immediately upon inspection, which reduces lead times, fabric waste, and enhances overall productivity. Our patterned fabric inspection systems are now expanding into new markets such as outdoor upholstery and OPW airbags, alongside the growing camouflage printing sector.”
Jason Kent, CEO of BTMA, added: “BTMA members continue to push technological boundaries, with innovations surpassing what was once thought possible. 2025 has already been a highly productive year for our members, and there will be plenty to showcase in Singapore.” BTMA exhibitors at ITMA Asia + CITME 2025 include: Airbond, Autofoam, AVA CAD/CAM, Cygnet Texkimp, Fibre Extrusion Technology, James Heal, MCL, Roaches, Saurer Fibrevision, SDC Enterprises, Sellers, Shelton Vision, Slack & Parr, Society of Dyers and Colourists, Strayfield, Tatham, The Textile Institute, Verivide, Vickers Oils, and Wira Instrumentation. Since its establishment in 1940, the British Textile Machinery Association (BTMA) has promoted UK textile machinery manufacturers globally. Operating as a non-profit, it bridges its members with the dynamic textile manufacturing industry worldwide.
