US upland cotton sales surge 70%, pima exports also on the rise

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has reported a sharp increase in Upland cotton sales for the week ending August 21, 2025, with net sales reaching 179,300 running bales (RB) for the 2025–26 marketing year. This marks a 70 percent surge compared to the previous week, signaling stronger demand in key global markets. The largest buyers of Upland cotton during the period were Vietnam (88,400 RB) and Bangladesh (37,800 RB). Additional demand came from Pakistan, Mexico, and Nicaragua, while modest reductions were noted in orders from Peru and El Salvador. Despite the increase in sales, shipments of Upland cotton saw a slight dip, totaling 112,700 RB compared to 123,300 RB the previous week. The primary destinations for these shipments included Vietnam, Bangladesh, India, Mexico, and Türkiye. In the premium cotton category, Pima cotton sales also recorded gains. Net sales climbed to 3,900 RB, a notable increase from just 1,000 RB the week before. Key buyers included India and Peru, reflecting sustained interest in higher-grade fibers. Pima shipments reached 14,000 RB, with volumes directed mainly to India, Vietnam, Pakistan, Costa Rica, and Peru. The report highlights strong momentum in Upland cotton demand, particularly from Asia, while Pima cotton continues to find a stable market among premium buyers. Together, these figures suggest a positive outlook for U.S. cotton exports in the early stages of the new marketing year.
