Vietnamese ministry proposes new e-commerce regulation to strengthen oversight

The Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) has proposed a new regulation aimed at enhancing the oversight and transparency of the country’s rapidly growing e-commerce sector. The proposed measures focus on improving consumer protection, tackling fraudulent activities, and ensuring that online businesses comply with local laws and tax obligations.

The regulation, part of an ongoing effort to better manage e-commerce activities in Vietnam, seeks to establish clearer guidelines for businesses engaged in online sales. One of the key provisions is the requirement for online platforms and sellers to register their operations with the government and ensure that all transactions are traceable.

Additionally, the new framework proposes stronger mechanisms to protect consumers from deceptive practices, such as false advertising, product misrepresentation, and unfair pricing. The Vietnamese government aims to create a more secure digital shopping environment by imposing stricter reporting standards for businesses.

The MOIT’s proposed regulation comes in response to the rapid expansion of e-commerce in Vietnam, which has seen a surge in online shopping, especially during the pandemic. The e-commerce market in Vietnam has become a critical part of the nation’s economy, with millions of consumers turning to online platforms for everything from everyday goods to luxury items.

By tightening oversight and ensuring better compliance, the MOIT hopes to foster a more sustainable and consumer-friendly e-commerce landscape, while also ensuring fair competition within the industry. The proposal is currently open for public comment, with stakeholders from various sectors urged to provide feedback before the regulations are finalized.

If enacted, these new measures will mark a significant step toward addressing the challenges of Vietnam’s rapidly evolving digital economy and may set a precedent for other Southeast Asian nations.
