UK freight sector urges government to boost rail freight growth

The UK freight sector is calling on the government to take decisive action to accelerate rail freight growth as part of efforts to reduce congestion, cut carbon emissions, and support economic growth. Industry leaders have outlined the potential benefits of increasing rail use for freight transport, including a significant reduction in road traffic and the associated environmental impact.

In a joint statement, several freight organizations highlighted that the government’s current investment in rail infrastructure, while positive, is insufficient to fully unlock the potential of rail freight in the UK. They are urging more dedicated funding and strategic initiatives to modernize rail networks, improve access, and increase capacity.

According to the freight sector, increasing the share of freight transported by rail could ease pressure on the country’s road networks, help meet sustainability targets, and enhance supply chain resilience. Rail freight also offers a more energy-efficient alternative compared to road transport, with the sector playing a key role in reducing carbon emissions within the logistics industry.

Industry representatives are optimistic that with the right government support, rail freight could become a central part of the UK’s future logistics strategy, benefiting both the economy and the environment.
