The criteria were developed over five years in close collaboration with a designated International Working Group made up of brands, retailers, suppliers, producers, NGOs, and technical specialists. Two publicly consulted drafts and a pilot version, tested in key material production regions from Peru to Italy, have helped refine the framework, alongside extensive work to ensure alignment with the ISEAL Code of Good Practice for Sustainability Systems.

The first version of the Materials Matter Standard includes all materials currently covered by Textile Exchange’s Responsible Animal Fiber framework, including wool, alpaca, mohair, as well as recycled materials, as currently covered in the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) and Recycled Claims Standard (RCS). Organic cotton, which has long been an integral part of Textile Exchange’s standards system, will continue to play a central role through a gradual transition pathway for the Organic Content Standard into the Materials Matter System. This pathway will preserve essential functions such as traceability while strengthening the system to enable more holistic, farmer-centered outcomes.

Looking ahead, Textile Exchange intends to expand the system through partnerships with credible programs that align with their shared vision for climate and nature impact. This includes exploring pathways for fibers such as cotton produced through preferred production systems and man-made cellulosic fibers. By collaborating with established partners and bringing efforts together under one framework, Textile Exchange aims to reduce duplication, ease the burden on suppliers, and enable brands to more easily source materials that deliver measurable benefits on the ground. This partnership-driven approach is designed to broaden opportunity and impact across the industry while accelerating progress for climate, nature, people, and animals.

Today, the publication of the final criteria marks the first phase of the transition. The Materials Matter Standard will become effective on December 31, 2026, meaning that sites can start to get certified, and will be mandatory from December 31, 2027. Organizations may continue using Textile Exchange’s current standards until this date to ensure a smooth shift for certified sites globally.

Ultimately, the goal of the Materials Matter Standard is to provide brands, suppliers, and producers with a credible mark that links production practices to measurable outcomes—supporting the industry’s move toward integrity and accountability at scale. To support this transition, Textile Exchange has also released the Materials Matter Claims and Labeling Policy, which guides brands in communicating certification to the Materials Matter Standard with clarity and accuracy, strengthening consumer trust and ensuring claims remain grounded and responsible.

Together, these documents form the basis of a transparent and trusted framework that provides certification users with a reliable way to substantiate the environmental and social information they share about their products. In the coming months, Textile Exchange will continue to provide its community with practical information on certification to the new standard through the release of further policies and guidance, as well as close collaboration on piloting certification procedures.

Today, the launch of the final Materials Matter Standard criteria represents a significant step toward Textile Exchange’s vision: a world where materials have lasting value, leading to thriving communities and landscapes.

Claire Bergkamp, CEO of Textile Exchange, said:

“The Materials Matter Standard is more than a certification; it’s a commitment to driving measurable impact at the very start of the supply system. By aligning expectations and outcomes across the industry, this standard accelerates progress toward climate and nature goals and ensures that sustainability becomes a shared responsibility.”

Ashley Gill, Chief Standards and Strategy Officer at Textile Exchange, said:

“The Materials Matter System strengthens integrity, reduces complexity, and connects best practices to real outcomes. By consolidating our existing standards into one system, we’re creating a clearer, more scalable pathway to systemic change across the textile and apparel industry.”

OEKO-TEX® annual report 2024/2025: Collaboration for transparent supply chains

In the 2024/2025 financial year, OEKO-TEX® once again demonstrated the power of collaboration when diverse stakeholders work together towards a shared goal. In an increasingly complex regulatory and market landscape, demand for credible sustainability data and independently verified solutions continued to grow. Working closely with its 17 independent testing institutes and numerous partner organisations, OEKO-TEX® issued over 57,000 certificates. This 8% increase on the previous year clearly reflects the industry’s confidence in transparent and reliable standards.
**Collaboration as a driver to progress
**Harmonisation, technical refinement and active exchange between science, industry and society played a central role in this development. Strategic partnerships proved decisive: enhanced mutual recognition with Cradle to Cradle simplified processes, while joint initiatives with the Global Nature Fund deepened OEKO-TEX®’s commitment to biodiversity and water stewardship throughout the textile value chain. By joining ISEAL, OEKO-TEX® reaffirmed its dedication to transparency and continuous improvement at the international level.
“The progress we achieved over the past year is the direct result of collective effort. It demonstrates the importance of trust, collaboration and open dialogue in driving sustainable change,” said Dr Alfred J. Beerli, CEO of OEKO-TEX®.
**OEKO-TEX® MADE IN GREEN celebrates 10 years of transparency
**A key highlight of the reporting year was the 10th anniversary of the OEKO-TEX® MADE IN GREEN label, which gives consumers access to verifiable supply chain data. Today, more than 18,000 products carry the label. With the global campaign Wear what feels right. Conscious choice made easy. MADE IN GREEN. OEKO-TEX® reached over eight million people around the world, sending a strong signal in favour of informed, conscious consumer decisions.
**Advancing chemical safety through shared standards
**Broad technical expertise and international cooperation enabled substantial progress in chemical safety. OEKO-TEX® updated the RSL and MRSL to enhance protections for especially sensitive consumer groups and to introduce new restrictions on bisphenols and fragrances. OEKO-TEX® also expanded the ECO PASSPORT certification to include both commodity and auxiliary chemicals, setting new standards for occupational safety and environmental protection in collaboration with industry partners.
At the same time, OEKO-TEX® deepened its cooperation with GoBlu. Today, 285 production sites (up 6% from previous year) connect to The BHive® platform, uploading their chemical inventories to a transparent database at helps all stakeholders mitigate risks and make better-informed decisions.
**Global responsibility through common standards
**OEKO-TEX® developed RESPONSIBLE BUSINESS in close alignment with the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains in the Garment and Footwear Sector. This alignment strengthens trust in the system’s credibility and reinforces OEKO-TEX®’s role as a partner for responsible business conduct. Participation in the OECD standards assessment represented a logical next step. Detailed results are available in the report.
“This report is not only an account of our activities, but also a testament to collective achievement,” concluded Dr Alfred J. Beerli. “The progress made in 2024/2025 reflects the shared efforts of testing institutes, license holders, partner organisations and stakeholders from industry and civil society. Their input has been essential in adapting OEKO-TEX® tools to current and future needs. We invite all stakeholders to read the report, join the dialogue and help shape the next steps together.”

In a strategic move to enhance its global impact on sustainable fashion, OEKO-TEX has officially joined the United Nations Fashion and Lifestyle Network (UNFLN). This membership marks a major milestone in the organization’s mission to support transparency, responsible production, and environmental stewardship in the textile and fashion industries.
TESTEX, a key institute within the OEKO-TEX Association, will represent the organization in the UNFLN. As a longstanding provider of independent testing and certification, TESTEX will contribute OEKO-TEX’s scientific expertise to global discussions on sustainable practices. The collaboration is set to strengthen initiatives that prioritize traceability, chemical safety, and socially responsible working conditions across supply chains.
By joining the network, OEKO-TEX is also aligning its work with multiple United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These include SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), through chemical testing to ensure safe textiles; SDG 5 (Gender Equality), via certification criteria that promote equal opportunity; and SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), by regulating chemical use and wastewater in production. In addition, the organization supports SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production) with tools like STeP and MADE IN GREEN that emphasize safe labor practices and full-chain transparency.
Further, OEKO-TEX is contributing to SDG 13 (Climate Action) by developing systems that measure environmental impact and promote climate-friendly manufacturing. Its involvement in SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) also opens the door to deeper collaborations with UN agencies, NGOs, and private sector innovators.
Membership in the UNFLN gives OEKO-TEX a global platform to present best practices and engage with high-level policy conversations. The organization will now have increased visibility in global sustainability reports, policy briefings, and forums hosted by the UN and its partners. This not only amplifies OEKO-TEX’s influence but also strengthens its commitment to supporting fashion brands, manufacturers, and consumers in building a more ethical and sustainable future.
This development underlines a critical shift: sustainability in fashion is no longer a niche topic—it’s a global imperative. With organizations like OEKO-TEX leading through action and science, the path toward responsible fashion becomes clearer, more credible, and more achievable.

Olano is known for his ability to create luxurious spaces using approachable pieces, according to Rugs USA. His latest additions to the Arvin Olano x Rugs USA are made from 100% wool and offer an ultra-plush feel underfoot.
New rugs include the Fritz Checked wool rug, with its chic, Scandinavian-inspired style that features a subtle grid motif emphasized by a high-low, cut pile. The rug is available in brown, beige and golden yellow. The rug is OEKO-TEX certified, tested for hundreds of harmful substances and handcrafted in India.
The Gaia wool shag rug is Olano’s take on a modern shag rug which features a plush, high pile. Olano said it fits any space where an extra-cozy feel is the goal. The rug is handcrafted of 100% wood in India and is available in an array of cool neutral hues including ivory, gray, dark gray and sand.
The Grace Bordered wool rug also has a somewhat contemporary feel, according to Olano. The design features a stylish border graced by Art Deco corner details. The rug is OEKO-TEX-certified, hand-tufted in India of 100% wool and available in brown and golden yellow.
Now available in green, the Melrose Checked rug offers a graphic pattern and rich tones. Made of 100% hand-tufted wool, Olano said it’s a true reflection of his belief that elevated design should be accessible for all.

Oeko-Tex publishes eco passport findings to enhance transparency

OEKO-TEX, a leading global standard for testing and certification of textiles and leather products, has published its Eco Passport findings. This report aims to improve transparency in the textile industry by offering insights into the environmental impact of various textile chemicals and materials. The Eco Passport initiative is a key part of OEKO-TEX’s ongoing efforts to drive sustainability and promote safer, more environmentally friendly practices within the textile sector.
Purpose of the Eco Passport Report
The Eco Passport report is designed to provide brands, manufacturers, and consumers with verified information about the sustainability of chemicals used in textile production. By providing a comprehensive overview of the ecological impact of these chemicals, the Eco Passport aims to help companies make more informed decisions about sourcing materials and chemicals. This report also contributes to enhancing transparency in the textile supply chain, enabling better accountability across the industry.
Key Findings in the Report
The report highlights key findings from the Eco Passport testing process, revealing critical data on chemicals that meet the stringent criteria for environmental and health safety. This includes:
• Low environmental impact of certified chemicals.
• Reduced toxicity in materials used for textile production.
• Improvements in waste management and water usage in the chemical manufacturing process.
The findings also emphasize how the certification helps manufacturers adopt eco-friendly alternatives, ensuring compliance with growing sustainability regulations.
Advancing Industry Sustainability
OEKO-TEX’s Eco Passport initiative is seen as a major step forward in promoting sustainable chemistry within the textile industry. The report not only offers transparency but also encourages companies to integrate safer chemicals into their production processes. With sustainability becoming a key demand from both consumers and regulatory bodies, OEKO-TEX is helping manufacturers align with global sustainability standards while ensuring that their products are safe for both consumers and the environment.
Implications for the Textile Industry
By promoting the use of safer chemicals and offering certifications like Eco Passport, OEKO-TEX is influencing the global textile market to move toward more sustainable practices. The findings are expected to:
• Encourage widespread adoption of eco-friendly chemicals in production.
• Influence the development of new materials that meet sustainability standards.
• Enhance brand credibility, as companies that adopt these practices can communicate their commitment to sustainability to consumers and partners.
Future Directions
The publication of these findings is part of OEKO-TEX’s broader strategy to improve industry-wide transparency and drive positive environmental change. By continuing to publish updated findings and supporting eco-certification processes, OEKO-TEX hopes to expand its influence and help the textile industry transition toward circular and sustainable business models.

India’s textile industry is a vital pillar of its economic and cultural legacy, evolving from traditional handlooms in villages to advanced textile mills today. As one of the country’s earliest industries, textiles account for 13% of India’s total industrial production, 12% of total exports, and 2.3% of the GDP, while employing over 45 million people, including 3.5 million handloom workers. However, this rapid growth has brought significant environmental challenges and driven by a national level task force on sustainability circularity, the country’s textile sector is now rapidly adopting sustainable practices. These range from recycling and upcycling efforts in micro and small textile clusters to firm level interventions by India’s large and listed companies in water, energy and material use efficiency.
India, an inherently circular nation, has a deep-rooted tradition of sustainability, dating back thousands of years. From hand woven khadi to organic cotton and natural dyes, India’s textile heritage is a testament to eco-friendly practices. This inherent sustainability is not just a legacy but a promising future for ethical fashion globally.
To highlight the country’s vision and commitment to a circular textile economy, sustainability will be a key pillar in India’s global mega textile event Bharat Tex 2025. Organised by 11 industry associations and supported by the Ministry of Textiles, Bharat Tex 2025 comprises a mega expo covering over 2.2 million square feet area, spread across two venues and showcasing the entire textile ecosystem including accessories under one roof. While the main event will be held from February 14-17, 2025, at the Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi and will exhibit the entire value chain of textiles, exhibitions pertaining to handicrafts, garment machinery and ethnic apparel will be held from February 12-15 at the India Expo Centre and Mart Greater Noida, NCR Delhi.
However, Bharat Tex is not just a showcase, it is also a movement to redefine the textile industry through eco-friendly practices, ethical sourcing, and cutting-edge technologies. Bharat Tex 2025 has positioned itself as a transformative platform as it seeks to engage and highlight the cutting-edge issues in sustainability and the measures being taken to address them.
Driving Sustainability: The Core of Bharat Tex 2025
Sustainability is no longer an option for the textile industry, it is a necessity. This is why the twin themes of circularity and sustainability will occupy centre stage at this year’s event. Bharat Tex 2025 will provide a platform to unite stakeholders across the value chain, fostering dialogue and action to embed sustainable practices into the industry’s core. By focusing on eco-friendly innovations, circular economy models, and ethical sourcing, the event aims to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility.
Evolution of the Indian Textile Industry
India’s textile industry has undergone significant transformation, becoming a global leader in textile and garment production. With a projected market size of US$ 350 billion by 2030, up from US$ 176 billion in 2023, the industry is growing at a CAGR of nearly 7.8%.
Despite its impressive expansion, the industry faces increasing pressure to address its environmental footprint, including challenges such as waste generation, water pollution, and reliance on synthetic fibres. A national level sustainability cum ESG task force in Ministry of Textiles is currently consulting all stakeholders to create pathways for a circular and sustainable textile ecosystem in India.
Eco-Friendly Innovations in Textile Production
The heart of Bharat Tex 2025 lies in showcasing groundbreaking innovations that prioritise sustainability at every stage of textile production and shape the future of the global textile industry. Bharat Tex highlights how sustainable practices can help overcome these issues and position India as a responsible global textile leader.
Special pavilions and Exhibitions

Bharat Tex will showcase cutting-edge innovations in sustainable textiles from eco-friendly textiles to zero-waste design techniques.

Exhibitors will demonstrate water-efficient dyeing processes, organic cotton farming, and other initiatives aimed at circularity and decarbonisation.

Exhibitors will showcase initiatives to minimize textile waste, from up cycling scraps into new products to implementing closed-loop manufacturing processes.

Winners of circular design contests, sustainability hackathons and other innovators to showcase their offerings in a special pavilion

A showcase of Kasturi Cotton, a new standard in cotton, with a transparently traceable value chain and globally acceptable quality standards

Showcasing of actual work done by individual industry as well as MSME textile clusters like Panipat, Tirupur and Surat

Renewable Energy Integration: Exhibitors showcase the adoption of solar and wind power, significantly lowering carbon emissions and energy costs.

Sustainable Fashion: Bharat Tex showcases innovations in sustainable fashion, from eco-friendly textiles to zero-waste design techniques. Designers and brands present collections that prioritize sustainability without compromising style or quality.
These innovations exemplify how the Indian textile industry is embracing sustainable solutions to address its environmental challenges.
Circular Economy: Closing the Loop
A transition to a circular economy is central to Bharat Tex 2025’s vision. By minimising waste and maximising resource use, the industry can address critical environmental concerns.

Upcycling Initiatives: Innovative practices demonstrate how pre- and post-consumer textile waste can be transformed into high-value garments, contributing to the circular economy.

Closed-Loop Manufacturing: Advanced technologies enable fibres to be recycled repeatedly without quality loss, revolutionising sustainable production.

Recycling Innovations: Creative solutions for repurposing discarded garments into new materials showcase the potential to turn waste into valuable resources.
These practices align India’s textile industry with global efforts to create a more sustainable and resource-efficient future.
Major Sessions and Workshops on Sustainability
Bharat Tex 2025 goes beyond showcasing products. By offering over 70 knowledge-sharing sessions and workshops, the expo provides actionable insights into implementing sustainable practices:

ESG & Sustainability: Exploring how environmental, social, and governance principles are reshaping the textile landscape.

Circularity in Textiles: Strategies for embedding circular economy principles into supply chains.

Pathways to Decarbonization: Crafting Sustainable Value Chains and driving a green economic transition

Sustainable Futures: The Future of Sustainable Textiles; discovering best practices in material and energy efficiency and Hazardous Chemical Elimination

Economic Greenprints: Navigating the Financial Landscape of Sustainability
These forums empower participants to bridge the gap between sustainability goals and practical implementation.
A Vision for the Future
The Textile Sector’s vision for the future aims to ensure that the industry remains competitive while meeting global sustainability standards. Bharat Tex 2025 seeks to both spotlight and amplify that vision. It stands as a transformative platform, shedding the light on India’s leadership in sustainable textiles and innovation. With real-world examples of eco-friendly practices and groundbreaking solutions, the event highlights the tangible benefits of adopting sustainability as a core principle. Multilateral conclaves on sustainability with stakeholders and development partners seek to delve into solutions for the twin challenges of cost and sustainable production while sessions on Global Sustainability Standards, debate upcoming global trends in sustainability along with India’s leading innovations in textiles. Bharat Tex also candidly faces the challenges the sector faces- from finance to technology and capital to skills- even as it engages with global best practitioners and seeks solutions.
By promoting trade and investment, inspiring green innovation, and preserving cultural heritage, Bharat Tex 2025, India’s largest global textile show shows us the way to a future where economic growth and environmental responsibility can coexist happily.
