OEMs have interest in rPP compounds that can meet application requirements for impact resistance at various temperatures and stiffness benchmarks. Those compounds must also be designed for fast injection molding cycle times which can help address cost concerns.

Additionally, aiming to make the automotive sector circular and maximize the efficient use of resources to protect the environment, the European Commission proposed a new regulation on end-of-life vehicles (ELV) in 2023. The new rules include circular design of vehicles to facilitate removal of materials, parts and components for reuse/recycling, and mandate the use of recycled plastics in automotive applications.1

This ask seems reasonable, but the reality is that this is not easily achieved: rPP content, even when originating from ELV waste, typically struggles to meet such demanding automotive OEM specifications.

Solution

Milliken & Company and ExxonMobil have a long history of working together. As a leading supplier of transformative chemical solutions that deliver essential performance, Milliken routinely helps brands and converters balance and enhance the properties and processability of mechanically recycled polypropylene content. ExxonMobil manages a portfolio of performance products that can provide the building blocks to help meet growing global demand for essential products.

Critical automotive OEM parts, such as wheel arch, and front fascia deflectors , must meet flexural modulus (stiffness), tensile strength, and impact strength specifications, so formulations that incorporate rPP content would have to meet these physical property requirements without compromising final performance or negatively impacting the injection-molding process.

Each company brought a unique skill set to help address the challenge. The companies developed trial formulations built around Milliken’s DeltaMax® performance modifiers and ExxonMobil’s Exact™ polyolefin elastomers (POE).

The technical team conducted several compounding trials using up to 25% Exact POE enhanced with DeltaMax® and post-consumer rPP content containing approximately 15% polyethylene.

These compounds were molded into dumbbell-shaped samples, which were then tested for flexural modulus, tensile strength, impact strength at 23 °C and at –20 °C, and for melt flow rate (MFR).

Results

The test results showed a Notched Charpy impact of 50 kJ/m2 at 23°C and 4 kJ/m2 at -20°C could be achieved with a flexural modulus of approximately 900 MPa and a tensile strength significantly above the target from various OEMs — passing the first hurdle of balancing mechanical performance. The MFR was improved more than two-fold over the initial rPP content compound, which has the potential to help reduce part processing costs. This can be achieved by decreasing operating temperatures and lowering cycle time, which can lead to lower energy consumption in the manufacturing process and a lower carbon footprint of the final part.

These results come from the innovative formulation enabled by Milliken and ExxonMobil’s collaboration:

The rubber-like behavior of Exact™ POE can help improve impact strength and limit drops in stiffness compared to other impact modifiers.

DeltaMax® performance modifiers can help improve flow rate and help boost impact further over recycled PP with Exact POE through compatibilization of the matrix-rubber interface, thus helping to facilitate particle dispersion and small particle size.

Following the successful initial trial, ExxonMobil and Milliken collaborated with Ravago, one of the leading compounders and recyclers, to evaluate a new formulation designed to meet the evolving requirements of the automotive industry.

The trial featured a blend of 20% Exact POE, 1% DeltaMax® performance modifier, and Ravapura®, a compound incorporating 25% certified post-consumer recycled (PCR) content — including 6.25% ELV material — in compliance with the new EU regulations.

Benchmarked Ravapura® grade meets the new ELV content thresholds and is suited for specific applications/parts in cars. The enhanced formulation demonstrated significant performance gains:

Melt Flow Rate (MFR): Improved by 200%

Charpy Impact at Room Temperature: Increased by 660%

Charpy Impact at -30°C: Increased by 200%

Although the addition of Exact POE slightly reduces flexural modulus, it substantially enhances impact resistance — bringing performance levels close to those of virgin materials like Exceed™ Tough PP8285E1. Trial results demonstrated that the formulation delivers comparable flow and impact performance to Exceed Tough PP8285E1, under both room temperature and extreme cold conditions (-30°C). This positions the solution as a strong candidate for OEMs and compounders seeking to balance regulatory compliance, sustainability, and mechanical performance in automotive applications.

“We’re excited to see the compound that incorporates rPP achieves similar (and even exceeds) performance as virgin materials,“ said J Dow, Global Market Development Manager for Polyproplylene, Vistamaxx™ and Exact™ at ExxonMobil. “This well demonstrated the value and power of collaboration that we can unleash possibilities by working together to help our customers meet stringent regulations.”

“The creation of viable compounds that incorporate rPP content is a major win, and we’re proud to play a role in solving this challenge together with our collaborators at ExxonMobil,” added Dr. Philippe Scheerlinck, Senior Market Development Manager for Milliken’s Chemical Business.

The curtain has fallen on the 29th edition of Proposte. All the exhibitors taking part in the 3-day trade show held in Cernobbio expressed satisfaction with the participation of buyers from all over the world.

As usual, at the closing of the trade show, the Board of Directors met to resolve on the offices to renew.

Piercarlo Viganò ends his 3-year term as President. “I am very happy to end my term after such an exciting edition. Attendance was up over 30 percent and, in particular, the participation of foreign companies increased by over 45 percent,” said the outgoing President. “I am also more than happy because my dear friend and colleague Alessandro Tessuto, of Clerici Tessuto & C., has finally given in to my entreaties and agreed to become the new President of Proposte for the next three years. I will continue to contribute to the organization of the trade show as Director of Proposte and President of Ascontex.” The entire Board of Directors of Proposte will be renewed: Mauro Cavelli passes the reins to his son Matteo, who will join Tessuto, Viganò, Marco Parravicini of Parà and Diego Vercellino of Sirio Tendaggi. The whole Board thanks the outgoing board member Mauro Cavelli for his valuable contribution, provided over more than twenty years of collaboration. 69 exhibitors presented their new collections at Proposte 2022 and visitors were given a general preview of the materials, designs and colors in the Exhibitor Forum installation located in the Padiglione Centrale.

The influences of the natural world stood out, both in the extensive use of yarns made from vegetable fibers, with some experiments in the use of unusual types and blends, and the color palette, dominated by warm earth tones alongside green and blue shades. Always present are off-white and neutral colors applied to new fibers and designs. The prints feature mainly animal and botanical motifs.

Bouclé and slub yarns are often used, giving heft and irregular textures to fabrics. Metallic yarns and laminated finishes are experimented with in both curtains and furnishings. An increasing number of exhibitors are paying special attention to sustainability, both from the production cycle standpoint and in the presentation of novelties characterized by the choice of recycled materials.

“I would like to sincerely thank all the exhibitors who continue to show their faith in Proposte by presenting their exclusive collections at Villa Erba,” said Director Massimo Mosiello “The trade show confirms its standing as an international showcase. This edition recorded 70% foreign visitors and 30% Italian visitors”.

Special thanks to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Italian Trade Agency ICE for their support. During the three days of the exhibition, the “Italy is simply extraordinary: beIT “video was shown in the Ali Lario and Cernobbio to promote Made-in-Italy production, support Italian exports and leverage the internationalization of the Italian economic system.

This year too, the Italian Trade Agency ICE, which supports the business development of Italian companies abroad and promotes the attraction of foreign investment in Italy, reconfirmed its collaboration with Proposte. With the intention of developing, facilitating and promoting economic and commercial relations of Italian companies with other countries, and with special attention to the needs of SMEs, the Italian Trade Agency ICE organized the incoming of 33 operators and 7 foreign trade press journalists from Argentina (1), Denmark (1), France (2), Germany (4), Japan (1), India (4), Lebanon (5), Mexico (1), New Zealand (2), Slovenia (1), Spain (3), Turkey (1), Uruguay (1), USA (9), United Kingdom (2), South Africa (1) and Hungary (1).

On April 28, the ICE Director General, Dr. Roberto Luongo, accompanied by Director Massimo Mosiello, visited the Italian exhibitors at Villa Erba. On April 26, ADM General Manager, Marcello Minenna, inaugurated the Laboratorio Mobile Milano in the Villa Erba gardens. The mobile structure enables the local performance of chemical analyses in a timely manner for specific product sectors.

Sophisticated aperitifs were held at sunset in the Villa Erba park on April 26th and 27th, after exhibition hours. Attendance was high and the participants were more than happy to share a pleasant moment of relaxation after a hard day’s work.

“It is always a pleasure, and Proposte, which has been showcasing the excellence of research and experimentation in textiles for home décor and furnishing at Villa Erba for 29 years, is a flagship exhibition for us. We feel it as a priority to collaborate with the organizers of Proposte and provide them with our support. The increased number of visitors is certainly a source of satisfaction for us too, and we take this opportunity to congratulate the organizers for their professionalism and expertise. Proposte is a global showcase and a flagship for Italy, generating great benefits also for ancillary activities,” added Piero Bonasegale, Director of Villa Erba.

The weather has been beautiful this month- mostly warm, gorgeous autumn weather. My garden needs a really good clean up but haven’t had much time to do it and really need some help for the heavier work. I don’t mean just mowing but helping rebuild some garden beds which are struggling with the ever invasive grass. I had tried no dig and still want to but the grass is just a nightmare to deal with so I am going to resort to some heavier interventions.

I also fell off the daily walks trolley- but have made a concerted effort this week to get out more often- hopefully it will push me into regular walking again as I do enjoy it when I go out. The nardoo has spread almost entirely over one part of the Turtle Dam at the bushland where I walk and the fungi are starting to make an appearance with the cooler sometimes foggy nights. I have been working on a traveller’s blanket inspired by nardoo although at the moment it is going slowly as I am working on a large commission which I really want to try and get finished late this week or early next week.

The commission got me back to doing some mono-printing but because of the warm ambient air at the moment it is not totally successful as the ink dries a bit quickly on the plate and I can’t get the lovely ghost prints which is really like. Maybe I will have to get up earlier but then my shed is too dark to work in. There had been plans to put lighting out there but it’s been put on hold because the money has been used to put food on the table during this time of covid.

The commission piece is in two sections and I have finished the first one and I included some fungi linocut prints in at the request of the commissioners. I actually really like the fungi in amongst the foliage and thought I would make a little toadstool as well.

I have been having a lot of fun printing it onto monoprints. I am selling the monoprints with linocut prints if you are interested.

The fabric background is about 30 cm x 55 cm and has been hand dyed and have then been hand printed with actual foliage and then with linocuts. They are $40 each-message me if you are interested.

I have also been working a little in my journal- another thing which I kickstarted again this week to get rid of the brain fuzz and I might start creating another workbook, after being inspired by Bruno Leti’s workbook #15- it is good to steadily work somewhere to work out ideas and I need to develop some new work for an exhibition next year at Meeniyan Gallery. Last weekend I went and looked at the space and also spent some time at Venus Bay and again the weather was gorgeous. The photo was on a walk late in the afternoon when the clouds had drifted in.

Since I last wrote I have been in a very grand funk a lot to do with the fact that Victoria was again in a hard lockdown and it is a very cold winter. Whilst I am regional and am not as hard locked down as Melburnians the simple fact of the matter is that all of my family is in the Melbourne zone so it feels like I am locked down in the same way. I did manage to get my first Covid vaccine shot in the time but have been struggling to get one for my mother who is a category 1 as I need to drive to her place an hour and a half away to take her as she can no longer drive and the availability of appointments was limited . All I can say is that her medical clinic where she has attended for many years and which is the only one around where she lives is not well organised.

I was supposed to be teaching at Fibres West next week but due to the Victorian lockdown and the closure of the border by West Australia they had to cancel me to give them a bit of time to make other arrangements for students who were in my fully booked class. I understand the necessity of course, but I miss out on the camaraderie with like minded people and also a big loss of income for me and as a lot of my income has been Covid affected I am struggling. I doubt I will ever see a reimbursement of my airfare I paid to Aeroflot last year for what was to be my first trip to exhibit in Russia. So if you feel inclined to support an artist please visit my shop page and see if there is anything you would like to buy or you could also commission me to make work. I will be running another on-line Traveller’s Blanket class starting on the 8th of August (which is a Sunday).

And then Gaelle Beech from The Anjelms Project in Perth has very kindly offered for me to exhibit some work in their Community studio in Fremantle and I will also send over some printed fabric for her to sell on my behalf plus I will be developing a few things to introduce you to my work and we may even develop a short workshop to follow via zoom- I am trying to nut it out at present exploring how to use the scrap packs and Khadi from The Stitching Project( and they have just had delivery of another shipment of khadi for khadi enthusiasts) and that also complements the fabulous clothing that the Anjelms Project do in collaboration with the Stitching Project. I must admit to being a little enthused by the idea of tie-on pockets, inspired by The Pocket ( A Hidden History of Women’s Lives) by Barbara Burman and Ariane Fennetaux. Beside it is a tie on pocket I made from a scrap pack of fabric from The Stitching Project.

But despite all the kindnesses and some exciting things I am finding it difficult to get enthused- I feel like I am dragging my self kicking and screaming to everything, especially since Fibres West got cancelled- it feels like creative block, it feels like complete adrenalin drain and it feels like I will never have another creative idea in a million years let alone the next 6 months, and I am really sick of my computer screen. I am tired of deleting the spam comments on my blog! I don’t feel like writing and I don’t feel like walking, both things I have to do and which I force myself to do and my garden needs loads of work (that is another story- I can’t operate my whipper snipper at present because I am having some rotator cuff issues- nothing major but the doctor thought it was probably not a good idea to get all macho with a whipper snipper). I have been trying to make my hands dig small amounts of dirt every day ( this often works to get me out of a funk) and if it all comes off I will have enough lettuce to supply all of Morwell, and as it is my lemon tree which is growing through a bucket but is now too big to take out of said bucket ( and has been too big for quite some time) is producing bucket loads of lemons. I would put them out to share but the hooning seems to have escalated to new levels with this lockdown and I would rather not see them used as projectile objects.

So If you would like to make your own Traveller’s Blanket, there is plenty of time to enroll. I will be starting the next class on 8 August 2021. I deliver pdf lessons over an 8 week period ( one per fortnight) and i set up a private Facebook group for discussion and question and answer. I also do a fortnightly zoom session for Question and answer. There is some video content but it is a slow process and I use simple stitches to create the effects that I do. The cost of the class is $75.00 AUS

These gases are captured and converted into energy, creating a closed-loop solution that benefits the environment. Outside of a landfill environment, Hyphyn™ also enables safe disposal through incineration without emitting harmful dioxins—another significant advantage over conventional vinyl.

Tested & Proven for Environmental Safety & Durability

Beyond landfill degradation and safe disposal, Hyphyn™’s performance and environmental integrity have been verified by a series of third-party tests, including:

Biodegradation – In a controlled lab study, Hyphyn™ was proven to biodegrade over 90% within 24 months in landfill conditions.

Post-Biodegradation Safety – Post-degradation soil was tested for over 1,000 potentially toxic chemicals; no harmful chemicals were detected. A side-by-side germination study with traditional vinyl further validated its environmental safety and healthy, toxin-free composition, with Hyphyn™ -treated soil achieving a 100% seed germination rate.

Indoor Air Quality – Hyphyn™ was also tested for VOC emissions, confirming it offers safe indoor air emissions and is compliant with the CDPH Standard Method (Section 01350) for indoor air quality.

Flame Retardant Free – Hyphyn™ passes Cal TB 117-2013 flammability testing, ensuring safety without the need for added flame retardant chemicals.

Superior Colorfastness – Hyphyn™ resists fading from light exposure, ensuring its color remains vibrant throughout its useful life.

Abrasion Resistance – Hypyhyn™ is engineered to meet or exceed all ACT performance guidelines, achieving 100,000 Wyzenbeek double rubs, making it ideal for heavy-use seating applications.

PFAS-Free Stain Resistance – Hyphyn™ is protected with a superior PFAS-free stain-resistant treatment, making it easy to clean with soap and water.

Bleach Cleanable & Disinfection Resistance – Hyphyn™ has been tested to withstand a wide range of industrial cleaners and disinfectants, including diluted bleach.

“We spent over six years consciously developing and testing Hyphyn™ to ensure it delivered the performance designers rely on from traditional vinyl, without the environmental burden of persisting in landfills or contributing to microplastic pollution,” concludes Nassimi. “Hyphyn™ is proof that durability, high design, environmental responsibility, and human safety can, and should, coexist.”

A curated selection of the new Hyphyn™ healthcare designs will be on view in the brand’s Healthcare Design Conference booth (#408) from October 25-28, alongside proprietary Hyphyn™ designs from the following distributors: Mayer Fabrics (#627), Arc-Com/Stinson (#813), KI/Pallas Textiles (#427), and Wolf Gordon (#2229).

“1888 Mills champions cotton and consistently proves that natural fiber innovation meets real market needs,” noted Marcy Gang, executive account manager at Cotton Incorporated. “This collection shows cotton delivers cost efficiency and gives consumers the comfort and performance they want at prices that rival low-cost synthetics. We welcome 1888 Mills’ commitment to making the benefits of cotton accessible to more people.”

For retailers, the assortment of home textiles is value-engineered to meet aggressive opening price points while still delivering quality. It fills the “good” category in a good-better-best merchandising strategy and features:

Bath: Lower GSM (grams per square meter) towels, engineered for softness and long-lasting loft wash after wash.

Bedding: Soft woven 100% cotton sheets, quilts, and comforters in versatile constructions.

Design: A range of solids, yarn-dyes, and approachable prints in muted, sophisticated tones.

The new line meets consumer demand for more natural options in value-priced bedding and bath products. With increased awareness of microplastics entering waterways during wash cycles, 1888 Mills saw an opportunity to provide a natural alternative that doesn’t compromise on price or accessibility.

Social Media is a place where millions of creators are making content, and it is a platform where growth takes a huge labor. Getting followers is not child’s play; it’s something you have to constantly work on. I, myself, have struggled quite a bit to get social media followers.
Now, why do you need followers? Well, the answer is simple: to increase your presence, and without followers, you are nothing on social media; without followers, you are just a person making videos. Now that you are here, you must be wondering, “How to get social media followers? Don’t worry, we are here to help you out.
I have tested several strategies, but none worked like the 11 tips I mentioned below, so to actually get followers on social media, keep on reading!

1. Define Your Niche and Audience

Now, first and foremost, you need to define what you are good at. If you have been using social media for some time, you know that each creator has their personal niche that they follow. Someone might focus on fashion, someone on beauty, someone on cleaning hacks, and someone might focus on education. Just like that, define your niche, what you want to present to your audience.
Audience loves to see consistency, so define your niche and post accordingly, as it will help you stand strong in this huge sea of content, and also allow you to get the right followers. Also, for business growth, post something related to your business idea, not something random.
Be relevant, find your own passion, and try to post that to grow followers.

2. Be Consistent With Your Posting Schedule

Another thing, that is gold, is consistency. Be consistence and maintain a schedule for when you will post. Don’t post at random times; post when your followers are most active. As it will help increase your visibility and allow your audience to engage with your videos, this will not only increase engagement but also help you get new followers.
If it feels too much, then use a calendar to schedule when you are going to post. It will help you stay organized and more put-together!

3. Create High-Quality, Scroll-Stopping Content

Now, I agree that it’s not always possible to get followers or create something groundbreaking, but try to create something that will allow your audience to reshare. Focus on quality, not quantity. I understand it’s not always possible to come up with new things; therefore, try to produce something worth sharing.
How to do that?

Understand your audience

Search for trending posts on social media

Be unique

4. Leverage Hashtags the Smart Way

Hashtags aren’t dead, but using them strategically is key.

Mix popular, niche, and branded hashtags.

Avoid spammy or overused tags (like #followme or #like4like).

Keep a rotating list of effective hashtags based on post type.
Why it works: Hashtags increase discoverability, especially on Instagram and TikTok, and can bring in viewers who don’t follow you yet.

5. Engage Actively With Your Community

It’s called social media for a reason; engagement matters.

Reply to every comment and DM (especially early on).

Comment on others’ posts in your niche.

Join conversations in relevant communities or groups.
Why it works: The more you engage, the more visible you become. People follow those who make them feel seen and heard.

6. Collaborate With Other Creators or Brands

Partnering with others exposes you to a wider, yet relevant, audience.

Do shoutout swaps, Lives, or joint giveaways.

Feature guest creators or ask to be featured.

Partner with micro-influencers if you’re a brand.
Why it works: Cross-promotion builds credibility and helps you tap into someone else’s engaged audience organically.

7. Use Analytics to Guide Your Strategy

Don’t guess, use social media analytics to shape what you post and when.

Check which posts get the most views, likes, saves, and shares.

Track your follower growth and drop-off points.

Post more of what works and less of what doesn’t.
Why it works: Data-backed decisions save time and lead to better engagement and growth over time.

8. Jump on Trends (But Add Your Twist)

Trending formats can give your content a quick increase if you stay original.

Watch the explore or “For You” pages for new trends.

Adapt them to your niche or brand voice.

Don’t copy; add your spin to stand out.
Why it works: Platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels favor trending content, giving you a chance to go viral or reach more people.

9. Optimize Your Bio and Profile

Make sure your profile tells new visitors what you’re all about.

Use a professional photo or logo.

Write a clear, benefit-focused bio (who you are and what you offer).

Add a link-in-bio to direct traffic to your website, shop, or other platforms.
Why it works: First impressions count. A strong bio builds trust and turns profile visits into follows.

10. Try Reliable Platforms for Faster Growth

Be Relevant- Don’t just post anything, be relevant, post something that your audience likes.
1. Define Your Niche and Audience Now, first and foremost, you need to define what you are good at. 2. Be Consistent With Your Posting Schedule Another thing, that is gold, is consistency. 3. Create High-Quality, Scroll-Stopping Content Now, I agree that it’s not always possible to get followers or create something groundbreaking, but try to create something that will allow your audience to reshare. Focus on quality, not quantity. I understand it’s not always possible to come up with new things; therefore, try to produce something worth sharing. How to do that? Understand your audience Search for trending posts on social media Be unique 4. Leverage Hashtags the Smart Way Hashtags aren’t dead, but using them strategically is key. 5. Engage Actively With Your Community It’s called social media for a reason; engagement matters. Reply to every comment and DM (especially early on). Comment on others’ posts in your niche. Join conversations in relevant communities or groups. Why it works: The more you engage, the more visible you become. People follow those who make them feel seen and heard. 6. Collaborate With Other Creators or Brands Partnering with others exposes you to a wider, yet relevant, audience. Do shoutout swaps, Lives, or joint giveaways. Feature guest creators or ask to be featured. Partner with micro-influencers if you’re a brand. Why it works: Cross-promotion builds credibility and helps you tap into someone else’s engaged audience organically. 7. Use Analytics to Guide Your Strategy Don’t guess, use social media analytics to shape what you post and when. Check which posts get the most views, likes, saves, and shares. Track your follower growth and drop-off points. Post more of what works and less of what doesn’t. Why it works: Data-backed decisions save time and lead to better engagement and growth over time. 8. Jump on Trends (But Add Your Twist) Trending formats can give your content a quick increase if you stay original. Watch the explore or “For You” pages for new trends. Adapt them to your niche or brand voice. Don’t copy; add your spin to stand out. Why it works: Platforms like TikTok and Instagram Reels favor trending content, giving you a chance to go viral or reach more people. 9. Optimize Your Bio and Profile Make sure your profile tells new visitors what you’re all about. Use a professional photo or logo. Write a clear, benefit-focused bio (who you are and what you offer). Add a link-in-bio to direct traffic to your website, shop, or other platforms. Why it works: First impressions count. A strong bio builds trust and turns profile visits into follows. 10. Try Reliable Platforms for Faster Growth Now, let me tell you a harsh truth: organic growth on Social media is not always possible. The garment manufacturers in the country raised concerns on Tuesday over severe disruptions to their financial operations caused by several troubled banks, according to a press release.
A delegation from the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association, led by its president, Mahmud Hasan Khan, raised concerns during their meeting with Bangladesh Bank governor Ahsan H Mansur at the central bank’s headquarters.
During the meeting, the BGMEA president explained the difficulties exporters were facing due to liquidity shortages in five struggling banks, the press release added.
Despite the inflow of export proceeds, these banks have allegedly failed to release payments to exporters on time and are unable to open new letters of credit, he added.
‘This crisis has left many garment factories in serious financial distress, disrupting regular operations and exports. Most worryingly, factories are struggling to pay workers’ wages and allowances on time, fueling labour unrest that could escalate into a law-and-order issue,’ he added.
He warned that the situation is tarnishing Bangladesh’s international image and eroding buyers’ confidence.
‘This is extremely damaging for the industry at a time when stability is critical,’ he added.
BGMEA leaders expressed deep concern that, without immediate intervention, many companies could soon become sick industries, leading to mass layoffs and increasing the country’s largest export sector›s vulnerability.
They urged the central bank to take swift and effective measures to resolve the crisis.
Governor Mansur assured the delegation that their concerns would be addressed promptly.
The central bank would make temporary arrangements to ensure the timely disbursement of exporters’ dues, thereby meeting their immediate financial needs, he added, stating that longer-term measures would follow to resolve the problem permanently.
BGMEA vice-president Md Shehab Uddoza Chowdhury, directors Mohammad Abdur Rahim, Fahima Akter, and ABM Shamsuddin, along with other industry leaders were also present in the meeting.

US tariff hike puts Indian textile margins under pressure

The recent hike in US tariffs on Indian textile and apparel imports is emerging as a major concern for the country’s export-driven industry. With the US being India’s largest market for garments, home textiles, and cotton-based products, the additional duties have immediately triggered pressure on manufacturers’ margins and competitiveness.
Industry analysts note that effective duties on several textile categories have jumped steeply, in some cases doubling, making Indian shipments far less attractive for US buyers. Many American retailers are already demanding discounts from Indian suppliers to share the tariff burden, while others are considering shifting sourcing to alternate countries such as Bangladesh and Vietnam. This is forcing Indian exporters into a tight corner, where absorbing costs could erode profits and passing them on could risk losing critical market share.
The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) has cautioned that the impact of higher tariffs will be particularly hard on clusters like Tiruppur, Surat, and Ludhiana, which depend heavily on the US market. Companies like Arvind Ltd. have already signaled that margins will remain under strain for the rest of the fiscal year, prompting cost-cutting and reduced non-essential spending. Smaller exporters, with limited capacity to absorb shocks, fear order cancellations and a potential slowdown in production.
Adding to the challenge is the timing: the hike comes during a period when global apparel demand is sluggish and raw material costs remain volatile. For India, the development underscores the urgent need to diversify export destinations and push for new trade agreements. Industry leaders are urging the government to provide policy support through incentives and negotiations to soften the blow.
For now, the tariff hike is not only squeezing margins but also reshaping sourcing strategies, leaving Indian textiles facing one of their toughest tests in recent years.
