No day 1 tariffs, but Trump threatens Canada, Mexico for Feb. 1

Washington — Despite not implementing tariffs on his first day in office, President Donald Trump said tariffs on two nations could happen on Feb. 1.

“We’re thinking in terms of 25% on Mexico and Canada because they’re allowing vast numbers of people, Canada’s a very bad abuser also, vast numbers of people to come in and fentanyl to come in,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “I think we’ll do it Feb. 1.” Trump took questions from the media yesterday as he signed other executive orders.

China wasn’t mentioned for the Feb. 1 date, but Trump did say tariffs on the nation will be related to Beijing’s decision whether to agree to a deal over social platform TikTok. Despite delaying a ban on the app over the weekend, Trump said on Truth Social that he still wants the U.S. to have 50% ownership of TikTok.

“Ultimately (Beijing) would approve it because we’d put tariffs on China,” Trump said yesterday. “I’m not saying I would, but you certainly could do that.”

When asked by a reporter about implementing universal tariffs, something else Trump mentioned during his campaign, he said, “We may, but we’re not ready for that just yet.”

In late November, Trump posted to his Truth Social page that Canada, Mexico and China would be hit with tariffs on his first day of office. At the time, he said he would implement 25% tariffs on China and Mexico, as well as a 10% tariff on China.

Trump also put out a presidential memo yesterday directing federal agencies to investigate why America imports more goods than exports. He also wants agencies to look into alleged currency manipulation and unfair trade practices.
