Indian Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas: Year end review 2024

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) has outlined its key achievements for the year 2024, highlighting substantial progress across multiple sectors of the energy industry. Over the past year, a series of initiatives have been implemented to enhance domestic petroleum resource utilisation, with a focus on energy access, efficiency, sustainability, and security.

The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has made notable progress in energy initiatives, focusing on access, efficiency, sustainability, and security.
Key measures include unified tariffs for gas pipelines, 80 CBG plants, increased ethanol blending, 144 OALP blocks allocated with ~$3.137 billion investment, and efforts to diversify oil and gas sources.

In line with the vision of ‘One Nation, One Grid, One Tariff,’ the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has introduced unified tariff regulations for natural gas pipelines.Under the SATAT initiative, 80 Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) plants have been commissioned, with 72 additional plants under construction.

The Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme has seen a marked increase in ethanol supply, rising from 38 crore litres in the 2013-14 year to 707.40 crore litres in 2023-24, achieving an average ethanol blending rate of 14.60 per cent. This has further improved to 16.23 per cent in the ongoing 2024-2025 period, with over 17,400 retail outlets dispensing E20 petrol (20% ethanol in petrol) across the country, the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas said in a press release.

As part of the Hydrocarbon Exploration Licensing Policy (HELP), 144 blocks spanning over 2,42,056 sq. km have been allocated to companies, with a committed investment of ~$3.137 billion. The Ministry also undertook robust measures to diversify oil and gas sources in the 2023-24 financial year, reducing the country’s reliance on specific geographies to strengthen India's energy security.
