Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) president Mohammad Hatem on Saturday urged the interim government to make implementable policy discussing with business people and other stakeholders to attract more investment and grow industries as well as generate more employment.

“The investment from both home and abroad is stagnant for many days due to unfriendly business policies for business in the country,” he made the remarks at a programme organised by Bangladesh Labour Rights Journalists’ Forum (BLRJF) in the capital.

BLRJF president Kazi Abdul Hannan presided over the function while its general secretary Ataur Rahman moderated it.

Hatem, also managing director of MB Knit Fashion Ltd said most of businessmen want that their workers to get fair wages. It will help to increase production and the industry’s growth.

“But international brand buyers talk about only trade unions. If they don’t pay fair and ethical prices for Bangladeshi products, it is impossible to ensure the rights of workers,” he highlighted.

Hatem also urged Bangladesh Bank governor to make the decision or make a policy after discussing with stakeholders and businesses to implement the policy.

“In the last six month, the government did not been able to ensure business business-friendly environment. Former government made wrong data on exports. Based on the data, the plan of LDC took. It is not the right time to graduate from LDC,” he highlighted.

He added that it is illogical tusk to increase gas and electricity prices without supplying enough gas and electricity in industrial units.

Speaking there, Tannery Workers Union (TWU) General Secretary Abdul Malek emphasised for ensuring a Tk25,000 wage for workers as high inflation hit them hard.

“There is huge potential of the leather industry but systematically the industry has been destroyed. Once, a cow rawhide was sold at up to Tk4000 but now we have to hurl in canel or bury in soil. Proper government support can boost the industry,” he claimed.

He criticized the unplanned tannery estate in Savar, also sought media support to grow the industry and ensure workers rights.

Mahmudul Hasan Khan, Deputy Director of Programs at the Bangladesh Labour Foundation (BLF) highlighted that good relation is crucial between industry owners and workers to grow the country’s industries.

“If wage of workers is increased, production will also go up. It would boost the country’s economy,” he also said.

BLRJF was formed in 2015. The forum arranged its annual general meeting at Tamanna World Family Park in Dhaka on Saturday.
