Amazon to launch drone deliveries in UK through Prime Air

Having already established safe and reliable drone delivery services worldwide in close partnership with regulators and local communities, Amazon is now working to do the same in the UK. Prime Air is taking steps to plan initial flights from its fulfilment centre in Darlington. In 2023, Amazon announced its plans to launch drone deliveries in the UK through Prime Air.

“While there is still much work to do, this is an exciting step forward for Prime Air. We will be lodging a planning application with the local authority to seek permission to build our flight operations facilities at the site, as well as applying for authorisation from the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to fly drones in the airspace. Once those agreements are in place, we will begin hiring team members to launch drone delivery,” the company said on its website.

Amazon is planning to launch drone deliveries in the UK through Prime Air, with initial flights set to begin from its Darlington fulfilment centre.
The company is applying for local authority approval and Civil Aviation Authority authorisation.
Amazon has already launched drone services in the US, delivering packages within 60 minutes using electric drones.

Amazon will continue to work closely with the CAA as they develop the regulatory framework to make commercial drone delivery a reality in the UK. In the meantime, the company will also engage with the Darlington community to answer questions and collect feedback as it seeks to offer this new delivery option.

Once the service is live, customers within the service area will be able to order items directly from the Amazon app or website.

Since launching in the US in 2022, Prime Air has safely delivered thousands of packages to customers in 60 minutes or less using a fleet of electric drones designed, built, and operated by Amazon.
